According to a floor span calculator I was pointed to, Douglas fir 3.5x3.5 (actual) beams should be able to handle that with up to 22" o.c. Even a king-sized bed would leave me with a clear span that's only about 6.5'. Another option would be to run the joists across the width of the bed. I was fixated on the idea of running the floor joists the width of our 10' trailer (along the length of our bed). Someone at a tiny house forum came up with an outside-the-box (as I defined it) alternative. Much closer to actually being workable.Ī much better FJ could be made by ripping a 1-3/4 x 9-1/4 LVL into two 4" strips and nailing them together to form a (2) 1-3/4 x 4" LVL. If you properly glue and screw 3/4" plywood subfloor to the top, then it is only inadequate by 6%. I did a proper engineering analysis, and a 3.5 x 3.5 SPF #2 (4x4) is INADEQUATE by 72%. Regardless, the Deflect-O-Lator does not check stress, so it is USELESS. That means L/370 or L/380 would be sufficient, but L/182 is twice as much deflection as allowed. L/182 IS TOO MUCH DEFLECTION! You want L/360 deflection or less. Since the maximum deflection for tile is L / 360, and for natural stone is L / 720, your floor is rated for Sheet Vinyl or wood. This translates to a deflection of L / 182. Thank you for using the John Bridge Forums Deflect-O-Latorįor joists that are SYP or Douglas Fir, in good condition, 3.5 inches tall, 3.5 inches wide, 16 inches on center, and 9.5 feet long between supports, the deflection calculated is 0.627 inches. Second of all, your wood section is 3.5" x 3.5", not 4" x 4". Your floor joists will be critical in stress.įirst of all, your span is 9'-5", so the closest chosen span should have been 9.5 ft., not 9 ft. That Deflect-O-Lator floor joist calculator is a joke. Sorry, I'm a little late to this discussion, since it took place late November. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. But maybe that extra strength is all I need to get me the extra 19" of clear span while still preserving my 2 inches of additional headroom. Instead of being about 250% stronger than a 4x4 beam, it would be only about 150% stronger. I realize that sacrifices lots of strength. Instead of laying a 4圆 SPF beam with the long edge vertical, I could lay the long edge horizontal. Am I wrong? If not, then will any engineered 4x4 beams do the trick?Īnother option I'm considering seems a little silly at first. However, from what I've been able to figure out so far, the extra 19" of clear span in our house rules out your typical 4x4 SPF or Douglas fir beams. The standard width of tiny houses on wheels is 8'6", and 4x4 SPF beams seem to cover their 7'10" clear span okay. These tiny houses are pretty much restricted to 13'6" in height (including trailer), so vertical space is at a premium. It's a tiny house on a trailer, so I want to keep the beam depth to no more than 3-1/2 inches (actual) to maximize headroom. But those companies' span tables treat those beams as beams rather than floor joists. I'm willing to consider engineered wood beams and have seen 4x4 LVL, LSL, and PSL products. I understand living room floors need to handle 40 psf live loads and 10 psf dead loads with L/360 deflection. Common lumber beams locally are Douglas fir and Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF). My clear span is 9'5", and I'd like the joist spacing to be no less than 16" o.c. Maybe an engineer type, carpenter, or internet sleuth can help me. I'm hoping to use 4x4 (nominal) wood beams as living room floor joists, but none of the online span tables/calculators seem to handle 4x lumber. This should reduce nausea, but is a bit disorienting. Snap the view when the yaw gets too far outside the bounds. I also have some ideas for future enhancements:ġ. You can also change your walking direction without dragging your viewpoint to the side, which is a big win for fighting nausea for me, so it has benefits even in non-shooters. I imagine it'll work quite well in Call of Duty style games. It should work in other games besides the Metroid Prime series as well. I find keyhole to be a much more intuitive (and less nauseating) navigation/shooting system for VR. Here you guys go, the option is working now! I'm pretty excited that it's possible to do this on GC/Wii games! No more gunface! The only issue I have right now is crossing from -3.14 to 3.14, but I almost have coded around that case. It probably will work with most 1st person games. Was busy last night implementing "Keyhole" aiming for 1st person games! I almost have it working, and it really improves the playability of the Metroid series. Not yet! Haven't had time to look at it yet. That would have to be able to be assigned to the KBM/XInput device. The mouse has a hardcoded option for freelook rotation. I also thought it the new layout was a bit easier to understand. Using just pitch correction in those games gets around this issue and works great. Yep, the main reason is that there are at least a couple games so far that have/had glitchy roll correction (Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, Wind Waker, etc.), where the menu was rolled incorrectly. It's working surprisingly well so far for a hack. In the tests I've done, it never hits exactly that float, so they've been fine. Yeah, the menus are upside down, but the game is fine. It would still be nice to get a couple more test points, but it's not looking good. It seems like it 0.5.0.1 is a regression for both Nvidia and AMD cards in Windows 7 for Dolphin. But controlling freelook with the joystick can easily make people sick. Is there any freelook rotation? I don't remember if I even implemented freelook rotation in VR mode. Seems like we should have a way to tie freelook rotation to the joystick at some point, if we're making it possible to have fully decoupled look/aim. At first I was worrying that first person games would be messed up by this feature, but it actually seems to work OK. Haven't played around with the decoupled look and aim in 3rd person games, but I bet it's great.ĭo you mean first person games? It is kind of cool. D had complained about camera pitch in his Zelda playthrough. I also don't like it when the floor isn't horizontal, or when the camera pitch suddenly changes. So that's why I had it as four hierarchical levels of counteraction.Ĭounteracting the pitch and roll for 3rd person games is great, considering the camera usually tilts downwards when you zoom out causing nausea. People would only want to counteract yaw if they were playing standing up or in a swivel chair, in which case they would want to counteract all three (otherwise they would fall over). Then pitch is the second worst, so most people would want to counteract both pitch and roll. Roll is generally considered the worst thing to do to the camera in VR, and an absolute no-no, so that is the first one I thought everyone would want to counteract. Is there any point in doing that? I couldn't think of any situation where anyone would want any other combination. I also changed it so you can counteract any combination of yaw, pitch or roll. Fortunately, I don't think it would ever be exactly 3.1415926535f. For those games, the camera would be upside down briefly. There are a couple of games where the menu is inside a rotating tube, and the detected object is the tube, so locking the angles causes the tube to stay still and the menu to rotate (which might actually be an improvement in terms of motion sickness). How does it work for games that have ReadPitch = 180? I guess you are reading the roll after I have corrected for ReadPitch so it doesn't matter. At least that situation is a lot less likely then the amount of rotated menus! It seems like most of the rotated menus I've found are exactly 180 degrees, and it seems unlikely that a game would ever flip the scene completely upside down on purpose. I have a local change that checks if the rotation is exactly pi, and if so resets the roll to 0. Are you saying Pikmin has an upside down menu but a right-way up game? Setting ReadPitch = 180 in those games fixes them. For instance, all the Pikmin menu's are rotated exactly 180 degrees, but when I remove the first couple objects using the object removal range feature, it flips back around to the correct orientation.Īll the games I have seen that rotate the menu 180 degrees, also rotate the whole game 180 degrees. I've looked into this a little bit, and it looks like there are a couple phantom 3D objects rendered in some of the menus. They “self-policed”: people in the scene kept an eye out for potentially dangerous behavior. People kept each other safe at the Fireside in other ways. But I didn’t want somebody to get destroyed at the club because they’re an idiot.” I’m gonna give you your money back, but you need to leave.’ Obviously, I wasn’t happy that they’re there. A lot of people are angry that you’re here. “So I would go to him, like, ‘Hey, listen, this is not a good place for you to be. He’s gonna get jumped,’ ” remembered Ramirez. “Someone would come up to me and say, ‘There’s a guy wearing Nazi pins. Occasionally, skinheads would show up at the Fireside, and they’d have to choose between getting out and getting beaten up. Ramirez, a regular at Fireside shows, said things weren’t always peaceful at the venue. I met other girls and exchanged zines with them, and found this community that I became a part of when I moved into the city,’ said photographer Rebar A. ‘When I look at the backs of people’s heads that I see in these photos, those are people that became my friends. “There were little ripples that happened afterwards, and people who were a little homophobic didn’t like it.” But overall, “the response was really positive.” It was nerve wracking, but I did it,” he said. He finally decided to try it at the Fireside. Sorrondeguy had been on tour with his band Los Crudos and tested the waters by coming out as gay on stage at those shows. “Black, Hispanic, queer, Asian - it was all identities kind of united just by the ability to hang out somewhere that was all ages, and people were listening to hip-hop to punk to two-tone ska.” “The scene was very diverse, in terms of all the different students and tweens and teens who are converging on the Fireside,” said Alex White, who plays in the band White Mystery and goes by the stage name “Miss Alex White.” Back then, in middle school and high school, White attended shows and performed at the venue. While many North Side music venues tended to draw a majority-white audience, and the Fireside was no exception, shows there were often a reminder that the punk scene strived to be inclusive. Two friends sit outside the Fireside in July 2004. Though on paper the venue operated as a hall that could be rented out (similar to a VFW) to bands, in practice it was a punk music destination at a bowling alley that was quickly gaining national recognition. The Fireside was starting to hit its stride. Peterson and Eaves were booking shows several nights a week. “I could always get the vocals up over the band at the Fireside.”īy the summer of 1994, the Fireside started to become known more as a music venue than a bowling alley. “For me, the Fireside was easy because it had that sort of a more dead sound…because it has acoustical tile ceiling… wood paneling walls,” he said. Though a bowling alley might not seem like an ideal spot for a decent sounding live music experience, Elliot Dicks – who oversaw sound at the Fireside – said it wasn’t as bad as you might think. RakstadĪs things started to take off, Peterson realized he needed staff - including live sound engineers and people to work the door - to keep shows running. ‘Sound man extraordinaire’ Elliot Dicks was one of several live sound engineers who kept shows running at the Fireside.
